Getting Started
▸How much does TapACrew cost?
Free to sign up and use. We charge a 10% platform fee deducted from each completed payment. No subscriptions, no hidden charges.
▸Who can use TapACrew?
Anyone 18+ legally able to work or hire in the United States. We're starting in the Southeast US (GA, FL, NC, SC, TN, AL) and expanding.
▸Do I need to be a licensed contractor to hire?
Not for residential work in many states, but check your state's requirements. Some states require contractor licensing for certain trades and project sizes.
▸Do I need a license to work?
Yes, for any trade that requires state or local licensing (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.). You're responsible for holding all required licenses.
▸How do I sign up?
Click 'Get Started', pick your role (Worker or Contractor), enter your name and email, accept the agreements, and confirm your email. Takes 60 seconds.
For Workers
▸How do I get paid?
Through Stripe Connect (ACH direct deposit). After you and the contractor confirm completion, the contractor releases payment. Funds typically arrive in your bank in 2-5 business days.
▸Do you withhold taxes?
No. You're an independent contractor, not an employee. You're responsible for your own income tax and self-employment tax. Contractors will issue you a 1099-NEC if they pay you $600+ in a year.
▸What's a lien waiver?
When you accept final payment, you sign a digital waiver acknowledging payment in full and waiving your right to file a mechanic's lien against the property. This is standard in construction and required by most contractors.
▸What if a contractor doesn't pay me?
Contractors sign a Payment Commitment when sending you an offer — that's a binding contract. If they don't pay, you can pursue them through the platform's dispute process and through legal channels independently.
▸Can I see who's hiring before I apply?
Yes. Click on any job to see the contractor's name, business info, ratings, and reviews from other workers.
For Contractors
▸How quickly can I find a worker?
Posting a job takes 5 minutes. Workers in your area get notified immediately. Most contractors get applications within 24 hours.
▸How are workers vetted?
Workers self-report skills, experience, and licensing. Many complete optional Stripe Identity verification (verified badge). You can also require insurance and other credentials per job.
▸Can I invite specific workers?
Yes. Browse the worker directory, view profiles, and invite individuals to apply to your jobs.
▸What happens if a worker doesn't show up?
Cancel the offer through the platform. Reach out to other applicants or invite a different worker. Workers who repeatedly no-show get flagged and removed.
▸Are workers employees or independent contractors?
Workers are independent contractors by default. You're solely responsible for proper classification (1099 vs W-2) under federal and state law.
▸What if I'm not happy with the work?
Dispute the hours through the platform. The worker can revise. If it can't be resolved, the dispute escalates to TapACrew admin for mediation. Final disputes can go to arbitration or court.
Payments
▸How does ACH work?
ACH (Automated Clearing House) is the standard US bank-to-bank transfer. Lower fees than card payments, but takes 2-5 business days to clear.
▸Do I need a bank account?
Workers need a US bank account to receive payments. Contractors can pay with bank account (ACH) or credit card.
▸Are payments insured?
Stripe holds the funds in escrow during processing. Once released, payments follow normal banking rules. We are not an insurance provider.
▸What if my payment fails?
Stripe will notify you. You can retry with a different payment method. The Worker isn't paid until the transaction succeeds.
Legal & Safety
▸Is TapACrew responsible if something goes wrong?
TapACrew is a marketplace platform — not an employer, contractor, or insurer. Disputes about work, payment, or injury are between the Worker and Contractor. We provide platform tools and informal mediation.
▸How does identity verification work?
Through Stripe Identity. Upload a government ID and a selfie. Stripe verifies and we display a verified badge on your profile.
▸What if I'm injured on the job?
Workers' comp coverage depends on classification (1099 vs W-2) and state law. Workers are encouraged to carry their own liability insurance. TapACrew is not responsible for injuries.
▸Do I need insurance?
Workers: General liability insurance is strongly recommended for trade work. Some Contractors will require it. Contractors: Builders' Risk and General Liability are recommended.
Account & Privacy
▸Can I change my role?
Roles are permanent at signup. Contact support if you need to switch from Worker to Contractor (or vice versa).
▸Can I delete my account?
Yes. Contact support. Some records (transactions, signed agreements, tax records) are retained for legal compliance for up to 7 years.
▸Do you sell my data?
No. We never sell personal information to third parties. Your data is shared only with service providers (Stripe, Supabase, email provider) for platform operations.
▸How is my data secured?
Encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, private storage buckets for sensitive documents, and row-level security in our database.
